Adidas company History

Adolf "Eddie" Dassler began making his own sports shoes in his mother's kitchen in Herzonaurach, Bavaria after returning from World War I. In 1924, his brother Rudolf "Rudy" Dassler also joined his business, which became Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik and flourished. The pair started their venture in their mother's laundry, But at that time the power supply in the city was not in reliable condition and these brothers sometimes had to use pedal power from a stationary bicycle to power their equipment.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics, Eddie Dassler traveled the world's first motorway to the Olympic Village. He also brought a suitcase full of spikes with him; he persuaded American sprinter Jesse Owens to use them, the first ever sponsorship by an African American.

After Owens won four gold medals in the race, Dassler's shoes became highly regarded among the world's most famous sportspersons. The two brothers' desks began to receive letters from around the world, and coaches from all other national teams became interested in their shoes. Business grew rapidly, and the Dassler brothers were selling 200,000 pairs of shoes per year before World War II. At the end of World War II, this shoe factory began making Penzerschreck anti-tank weapons.
