The AAI ACR was a prototype fletchet-firing assault rifle produced for the US Army's Advanced Combat Rifle Program from 1989/90. Although the AAI design proved effective, as did most weapons presented, the entire ACR program ended, with no 100% better performance than the baseline M16A2 for a successful ACR weapon.

AAI ACR Rifle Design

Based on AAI's SFR/XM19 rifle developed as part of the SPIW programme, the AAI ACR was one of the more traditional entrants to the ACR program externally. A closed bolt, gas operated, full stock, magazine fed, conventionally placed rifle.

Other contemporary sources describe it as innovative, but how it differs from the traditional long or short stroke piston systems already in place at the time is unclear. Jane's Infantry Weapon is anticipated to mimic the system from the previous Serial Bullet Rifle/Serial Fletchet Rifle in which the 3 chambers were cycled in and out of alignment with the barrel to produce rapid 3 round bursts.

The AAI ACR Round consists of a broken fletchet packed in a conventional brass case of 5.56×45mm round. The fin-stabilized fleechette weighs 0.66 g and is approximately 1.6 mm in diameter and 41.27 mm long, with a rough surface so that the sabot and fleechet stay together during shot travel. The Sabot is a four-part spindle sabot made of liquid crystal polymer, which is held in place with a rubber O-ring on the back of the Sabot. The choice of material resolved AAI's issues with previous Flesh rifles such as those developed during the SPIW program. That is, the rear plastic failed or the dust generated is considered a health hazard, and the rear cartridge requires the use of primer actuation. The Flechette & Sabot assembly weighs in at 1.36 grams, providing a low recoil impulse. 55000 psi firing. generated chamber pressure
