There are three parts of the Indian Parliament on which the democracy of India rests - the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha and the President. Lok Sabha is also known as the lower house of the Parliament of India or "House of people". Whereas the state is all known as the upper house.
The members of the Lok Sabha are elected by direct election
on the basis of adult suffrage and represent their constituencies. Members of
the Lok Sabha are a part of the Indian Parliament along with the President of
India and Rajya Sabha members. The members of the Lok Sabha act as the
representatives of the citizens of our country.
Some facts about Lok Sabha
- It is the lower house of the Indian Parliament and is also
known as the House of the people.
- The maximum strength of the House as prescribed by the
Constitution is 552. Maximum of 552 members can be elected for Lok
Sabha(maximum of 552 members can be elected for Lok Sabha), up to 530 members
to represent the states(530 members to represent the States), up to 20 members
to represent the Union Territories To represent the Union Territories (20
members to represent the Union Territories) and not more than two members of
the Anglo-Indian Community to be nominated by the Hon'ble President, if in his
opinion, that community is not adequately represented within the House.
The eligibility criteria of a Lok Sabha member
- He should be a citizen of India.
- His minimum age should be 25 years.
- He should not have any criminal record.
- He should be nominated for election from any part of the country.
- He should be educationally qualified under a law made by the
Parliament.
Number of Lok Sabha seats
At present, there are 543 total constituencies in India,
although the maximum number of members can be up to 552. Elections are held
every 5 years in which Lok Sabha members are elected through direct elections.
At present, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Lok Sabha seats at 80,
followed by Maharashtra with 48 and West Bengal with 42. ,
