SunRise University School of Yoga and Naturopathy Program

No physical evidence supports the claim that yoga is as old as civilization. The earliest archaeological evidence of yoga are stone seals dated to around 3000 BC depicting yoga postures. Today we can divide the history of yoga into four periods. The Vedas are the sacred texts of Brahmanism, the basis of modern Hinduism. The oldest known yoga teaching is in the Vedas; Therefore, such teachings are called Vedic Yoga. The composition of 200 Upanishads epitomizes pre-classical yoga. The Upanishads describe the inner vision of reality arising out of devotion to Brahman. These further explain the teachings of the Vedas.

Around 500 BCE, the Bhagavad Gita or the Song of God appeared. At present scholars consider it to be the oldest known yoga text. The formulation of the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali Uttara Classical Yoga differs from the previous period in that it is more concentrated in the present. It no longer tries to free a person from reality but tries to accept it and live in the present.
