The official name of NEET PG is the National Eligibility and Entrance Test, which is held in India to offer admission to medical PG seats. The interim order was issued on a batch of petitions filed by doctors challenging a notice issued by the Centre and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) on July 29, 2021, providing 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% for EWSs in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-PG) admissions for medical students.

Both the NEET PG and the INI CET are PG-level medical entry tests. NEET-PG is an annual exam administered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for admission to different MD (Doctor of Medicine), MS (Master of Surgery), and PG Diploma programmes across the country. The scores are also used to determine eligibility for postgraduate MBBS DNB programmes.

INI CET, also known as the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Examination, is held by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi and provides admission to PG courses such as Masters of Surgery (MS), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), Doctorate of Medicine (DM), and Master of Chirurgie (MCh) at 11 institutions across the country, including eight AIIMS, JIPMER (Puducherry), PGIMER (Chandigarh) (Bengaluru). The INI CET is held twice a year, once in January for the January session and again in July for the July session. For the first time, the INI CET was held on November 20, 2020.
