PhD History or Doctor of Philosophy in History is a 3-year
full-time doctoral course which is the study of written events and records of
humanity. It explains a broad view of social, cultural, religious, political
and economic development since prehistoric times.
The PhD in History is an advanced research degree, awarded
on the basis of a thesis and an oral oral examination. The primary objective of
the PhD is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of
independent and original academic research, which is completed in three or four
years when studied full-time and in five years when studied part-time.
Each PhD student in the Faculty of History is supported by a
supervisor (or in some cases, supervisors). Supervisors are experts in their
field of study and support students throughout the Ph.D. Students will also
benefit from the advice and support of other academic members of the faculty
involved in progressing through the various stages of the PhD, from the
registration assessment exercise at the end of the first year to the completion
of the thesis.
Most of our PhD students study here full time but every year
we admit many students who want to study on part time basis. Part-time study
can be ideal for those who want to pursue a postgraduate qualification without
leaving employment and develop their careers while continuing to earn, or for
those who are home-based for whatever reason and want to learn more about their
skills.
However, it is important to note that a part-time PhD at Cambridge is not a distance learning course. Part-time students are expected to engage fully with the faculty, integrate into the University's research culture and attend the University regularly for supervision, study, skills training, research seminars and workshops.
