Shang-Chi 2 is official, and it's coming from the same writer and director behind the first film. A new report from Deadline (opens in new tab) reveals that Disney has struck a new multi-year deal with Daniel Cretton, writer and director of Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, with several projects now are working. Chief among them will be a follow-up to Shang-Chi, which seemed inevitable given the film's success and Marvel Studios' commitment to the franchise, now outright confirmed on the way.
The deal
also includes Creighton developing new TV projects for both Disney and Hulu
through its new Onyx Collective brand, which was created specifically to curate
projects from creators of color. Cretton's new production house Family Owned
will focus on telling the stories of communities that are often overlooked by
major pop culture productions.
"Destin
is a wonderful collaborator who brought a unique approach and skill to
Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Ring," Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige
said in the announcement. There are so many interesting ideas bringing stories
to life on Disney, so we're thrilled to expand our relationship with them and
can't wait to get started."
While
Shang-Chi's next solo journey likely won't arrive in time for Marvel Phase 4,
we're still getting more and more details about her first one — including the
fact that another character is in what was originally a climactic fight. I had
to die, according to the deleted scene.
